Welcome to the project page of South Africa, where new aspiring artists, street artists, educators and professional cartoonists come together – representing common wishes for the future!

This project is an initiative of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in South Africa in collaboration with the City of Joburg.

Mural Contest in Johannesburg!

Citizens of South Africa,

We have invited you all to share your vision, ideas and hopes about the future we need, and you have made yourself heard! Thank you South Africa for sending these very important messages into the world!
Below you can see all the ideas about the future we need that you’ve shared, and many of them turned into cartoons by cartoonist across the globe.

ZAHEER SOOLIMAN’S idea has be turned into a beautiful mural on the wall of Dowtown Music Hub in Joburg, co-created by the Cuban Cartoonist Osval‘s interpretation and street artist Ras Silas Motse.

The mural has been unveiled on Thursday 11th of Nov, during the #cocreateMyCITY event by the world famous cartoonist Zapiro!

Announcement of the winners!

The voting panel for the contest consisted of members of the Embassy of The Netherlands in SA, award-winning cartoonists, members of the hosting wall for the mural Downtown Music Hub, street artist Ras Silas Motse and members of Joburg Inner City Partnership!

The panel was overwhelmed by the amazing talent, great ideas and important voices about the future we need. All sketches on this page will continuously be shown to the world, and will reach plenty of decision makers yet to come!

1st prize

Nov 11th - Unveiling of the Mural and dialogue in Joburg

Save the date! On Thursday the 11th of November the mural in Joburg will be unveiled by the world known cartoonist Zapiro, as a part of the #cocreateMYCITY event.

The mural is co-created with the street artist Ras Silas Motse, professional cartoonists from around the globe – to represent the voice of the future generations.

We’ll talk about the power of cartoons, the messages that need to be heard from the next generations and the themes represented in the mural.

These exciting dialogues will be held with other honoured guests such as award-winning Dutch cartoonist and editor-in-chief of Cartoon Movement Tjeerd Royaards, members of the Embassy, the City of Joburg and hopefully you!

Meet our wonderful and talented South Africa Team!

We work together with artists, educators and youth professionals. Check out local street artist Ras Silas Motse, professional cartoonist Emanuele Del Rosso and the world famous cartoonist Zapiro. We are so excited and grateful to be working with Joburg Inner City Partnership (JICP), The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) and DownTown Music Hub.
