Cuba

Welcome to the project page of Cuba, where new aspiring cartoonists, educators and professional cartoonists come together!

Cartoon Contest!

The Next Movement and the Cuban Frikomic group kicked off the project with a contest. This challenge La Nueva Escuela “The New School” invited all cartoon lovers everywhere – new and professional – to select a historical character and draw him or her, putting their own stamp and creativity on it.

Some of these drawings got published and received professional feedback from award winning editorial cartoonists!

You will find all of the drawings from the contest here.

Meet the artists

Youth empowerment program

The artists from Frikomic have started their training on how to use cartoons in youth empowerment programmes.

They are excited to combine their artistic expertise with youth facilitation. And as we approach all beautiful processes of change here at TNM, we say it all starts with the conceptualisation we have about ourselves and the world around us. So the Frikomic artists have shared with you their conceptualisation of themselves as youth facilitators. Check out their artistic reflections and interpretations here below!

Below you can check out the artwork of Frikomic’s group of artists:

They introduce themselves to you via their art! TNM and Frikomic will be collaborating from June onwards to create youth sessions for social transformation and empowerment throughout Cuba, via the power of cartoon art! So stay tuned…

The cartoon contest

Together with the artists of Frikomic we kicked off a youth programme with youth across Cuba on June 3rd!

In this youth programme we focus on:

  • Supporting interested youth in developing their cartoon skills. We look at the difference between a cartoon and editorial cartoons, where the power of the idea is central.
  • Using cartoons as a tool for social empowerment and dialogue. We invite youth across Cuba to sketch about their ideas of the future. Their sketches/cartoons will be presented in an exhibition in November 2021 and shared with the world!

Workshop december 2020

Our Cuban Cartoonist Miguel Morales Madrigal gave a workshop demonstrating his techniques, and told his story about what it means to him to be a cartoonist!
